Pictures of the TO-35 I'm looking to buy

For your consideration: This is a TO-35 owned by a friend of mine. He's a young fella who is still trying to farm in a rapidly urbanizing county. He wants to sell this because he feels a gas tractor is too expensive to operate. He put new tires and rear rims on it when he got it a couple of years ago. The Serial number is SHM-180539. I don't know what the SHM means but it looks like the s/n makes it a '58.

This next shot shows the block numbers. Under the casting number there is a stamped number that is very faint. You can kind of see it just above the radius rod. The casting number is Z134A500P. The stamped number is Z134A500. I don't know what the CWC means, but I'm assuming the L207 is a date code indicating Dec 20, 1957.

This shows some problems. The tach cable has nothing to attach to because the original generator has been replaced with an alternator. The air filter oil cup is missing and the air cleaner appears to be full of crud. The carb is really caked. I scraped off the brass tag and found a MS part number of TSX883 plus what I assume is another date code "58 2" which would be Feb 1958. third party image

The sheetmetal is overall pretty good. The grille is missing and I don't know where the spare tire bumper came from. The dash is a different shade of red as the rest of the tractor. I haven't heard it run yet because it's out of gas. The owner says he forgot to shut off the fuel and the carb float stick allowing the tank to drain. My fear is that the fuel has been filling up the cylinders and leaking down into the crankcase. There seems to be a lot of signs of fuel leakage on the right side of the transmission where the fuel line (rubber hose) is routed.

So, what do you think? Is it still a steal? How tough is it to find an air cleaner or at least the oil cup?

Also, someone mentioned I should contact someone named Big Dean. Is he on this site? Does he have a website?

The "H" on the SN plate indicates is has a high-altitute engine. This engine is basically the same as the regular Continental Z134 gasoline engine except for modifications to improve performance above 5000' altitude. The engine is fitted with flat top pistons which increase the compression ratio from 6.6:1 to 8.1:1.

The static spark setting is 3 degrees BTDC instead of 6 degrees in the regular engine. The carb needle settings must be set leaner to provide the correct air/fuel ratio in the lighter air. The tractor was originally equipped with a permanent tag which reads, "Warning, do not operate below 5,000 feet."

Well, I have my receipts. New Rear Tires 10x28 were $149.75 and Rims $90.00 Tubes $27.75. Mounting and dismounting $25.00 tire.

Just these three Items are about $600.00 alone.

Thus the rest of the tractor is only costing $400.00 (Not Bad)

Jim, The shape of this tractor dictates it's a good buy, of course assuming the engine is on par. Are you sure the sn starts with SHM and not SGM? As someone else mentionned hard deal to beat.

I'm positive on the SHM. I looked at it several times and since I'm not familiar with Fergie nomenclature I made sure I wrote down exactly what I was seeing so I could give accurate information here. That said, the ID tag is on the dash and the dash is a different color than the rest of the tractor.....any chance the dash is a junkyard replacement off another tractor?

Don't shoot me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure someone else posted a comment that SGM meant live-drive type PTO, and SHM meant the opposite (or vice versa). I think it was hidden in amongst one of the "my hydraulics don't work" links that I've read.

Thanks, that's the info I was looking for. I couldn't find anywhere that said what SHM meant. I probably should spend 1/2 hour in the archives.

btw, I seem to remember a couple of casting marks next to the pto lever. One setting said "ground pto" and the other said "engine pto". I wasn't sure what that was all about either.

Ground PTO keeps your PTO speed constant relative to your ground speed - engine PTO gives your PTO speed relative to engine rpm.

Take your pick depending on what implement you have attached to the back, and whether or not ground speed will affect the quality of your work.

Jim; Are you looking for a work tractor then exspanded alum on the front presure wash it and you got a great deal if it runs OK! I would buy it but then I like those Fergusons too. They all leak and it might not have been cleaned in years. Mark H.

Did I miss the price? I don't see price mentioned. I would want to know if it runs first. I have a to 35 and have had no problem finding parts, doesn't look like you will need much. If you are lucky maybe just new fluids, spark plugs, and air cleaner. Good luck.

The new rear tires and rims make that pretty attractive. You can scrounge a generator if you want the tach to work, find an air filter piece at a wrecker, and get the carb cleaned up. If those small things were all in place and the guy was asking $1200 you'd probably think it was a pretty good deal right?

As far as the gas draining into the oil, that exact thing happened to me. Check the dipstick; see if it seems really full of oil, and if the oil smells like gas.
After draining mine and refilling, oil pressure was actually up a bit, and I felt like the engine had had a good rinse! (I did run it for a few minutes before realizing what was up; thought I just left it near empty and the last bit of gas had dripped on the ground or so.)

Doubt you'll find a better deal.
