I have the opportunity to purchase a massey 1951 T0-20 but I know little about this tractor. I have twenty acres, aprox. five of which I would like to mow. I plan on using the tractor for a post hole digger and would like to have moderate capabilties for a bucket. Is this tractor large enough to suit my needs? If not, what should I be looking for?

Jeff...All these comments regarding the ferguson TO20 tractor are relatively good honest comments, I have had mine for years and it is a great little tractor and has plenty of power to do just about anything you ask of it, you can do a lot with this little tractor but it doesn't have PS like was said in previous comments and its a small H.P. tractor, but so what! I have a gannon and a post hole digger and it will power and pull a bush hog with no problem, there's something you should know that I've found in my searches this last year about loaders...I was going to buy a loader and install it on my TO20 but I found its cheaper to buy a tractor with more horsepower, that has PS and live PTO that already has the loader installed than to install one on my tractor. The lowest I've found I can get for a new low capacity loader is 3K and the used ones can be a gamble for around $750.00 plus and thats not installed mind you. So look over all these comments and think it over before you buy, what everyone has said here has there merits and you have to deceide whats best for your situation and how much your planning on using each feature of the implements you want installed on your tractor. In some cases it is cheaper to rent than to own and maintain. Great comments guys and good luck Jeff...

I agree with Dennis in Ma, your going to have to weigh the opinions.
I have a FERGUSON TA2085. I run a 5' Woods finishing mower, I have a Hydaulic loader with a hydraulic bucket and a 6' rear blade and a 6'front snowplow blade with manual angle. I might also add that my loader runs off a front drive pump and I have a position control on my 3pth lift. This tractor does everything I ask of it. You just have to know the limitations of the loader. It will lift about 700lbs easy. I figure I have slightly more invested than if I had bought a decent garden tractor, and it does a LOT MORE than a garden tractor. As for a post hole digger I'd get a gas powered one at the local rental store. For general work around a rural property with snowy winters and grassy summers, its a great old girl. Its the same age as I am it it runs better than I do. good luck

The tractor will handle all that. However, if you plan to use the tractor to mow, etc., while the loader is installed, you probably will be disappointed in the maneuverbility. Even with the bucket removed, the loader will weigh down the front end making it harder to handle around shrubs, trees, etc., since it doesn't have PS. If you have the luxury of having more than one tractor and you just want to use one for a loader to muck stalls or load machinery, etc., then you probably will be satisfied with that, but if you expect to mow or plow with the same tractor you most likely will be unhappy with that arrangement. My 2 cents. I have a TO-30 with Wagner loader. As to the PHD, they are much safer on tractors on which you can lift the implement without having to have the PTO engaged, like a Ford NAA, e.g., but again it will work on that tractor.

Permit me to add to Phils post.... A post hole digger is the most dangerous tractor attachment used. Without live power this is compounded by not being able to control the lift with the auger not turning unless the PTO shaft is disconnected. Remember, this is a light tractor and the front axle assembly isn't built for anything larger than the original type front loader made for manure moving. If you plan to lift large hay bales a much larger tractor is needed. Harry Ferguson tractors are great small machines and perform faithfully---IF you know their limitations and capabilities.

One of the good things about a forum like this is that you get a lot of opinions. One of the bad things about a forum like this is that you get a lot of opinions.
I respectfully disagree about the use of a loader on that machine - almost. I have a TO30 (only slightly more power than the 20- same basic tractor) with a wagner loader and I've used it alot for about everything from scooping snow off my 600 ft driveway to landscaping and hoisting engines. It is true that a bucket of dirt or heavy wet snow makes for a real fun time in trying to steer as it has no power steering. But having said that, if you are going to us it for occasional heavy lifting and most of the time for more mediocre jobs, it will be fine.
Most of my 'heavy' work has been moving and spreading probably 40 18 wheeler loads of gravel and dirt and loam while finishing my house. If I was a contractor I'd be really upset at the amount and speed that I could move the stuff but as a 'private citizen' just working on my property it was very adequate for the job. I'd just take a little less at a time.

It all depends on what it is you're going to do with it. I'd love to have power steering but the few times that I really fill the bucket with a heavy load, I get by without it.

The Other posting from Marlowe hit the nail on the head. A TO20 should be fine for mowing and running an augger but if you think about it running a FEL or a bucket loader will most likley be to much strain for a tractor that size. 20 HP is the same size as my riding mover.
If you weigh the needs that you have the TO20 may be fine for what you need. It depends on how badly you want a Loader. If it is a hard requirement then look for a bigger tractor (At least a 35 HP) Good luck Joe

We mounted a Farmhand F 10 cable loader first on a TE 20 and later on a TO 30. No problem stacking hay or loading manure. Finally wore the loader out.
