Am changing oil & filter on a Ferguson 1948 TE-20. Picked up oil filter (WIX 51107) from Massey dealer prior to starting. Removed what appears to be a Baldwin T-44-M oil filter from tractor. Solid bolt through middle of filter holds it in place. Another tube comes down side of filter mesh, I assume to pick up oil. Wix filter will not go into wire mesh housing because it is hitting tube on side. What filter do I use and can anyone explain how the filtering process works? How does the oil circulate through the filter? The bolt through the center of the filter is solid and therefore no capacity to pick up or discharge oil.

I'm jumping into this discussion thread because it's recent and my problem concerns oil change on a TO20. I'm hoping for a reply.

I just changed the oil and when snugging the housing up against the oil pan, the bolt shattered the cast iron housing right around the bolt hole.

I now have it jerry-rigged with a washer and some instant gasket sealing it up.

Can anyone tell me where I can order that housing for the oil filter?

I use a Baldwin T-44 on my TO_20. A Massey Dealer I go to sells them Re-packaged in Massey-Ferg. boxes. A to-20 has a spring to hold them off the lower cover, so I assume that they are suction filters. The center bollt (again,w/ a contental-TO-20) is threaded into a oil pipe, both have right hand threads, so go easy when you tighten same or you will have to pull the pan if the top un-threads next filter change. Hope that is a bit of help. Im shure WIX can sell you a filter, but I cant check the # for you.

Terry, The process is too complicated to go into here but if you buy the genuine Ferguson TE workshop manual all is explained, with diagrams, in great detail on pages C3 to C6.
