I have been reading some of the past postings about using the internal pump for external hydraulics. It is clear that if you want to truly separate the function of the 3 pt lift from whatever other devices you want to hook up you need to interrupt the pressure stream. Various methods have been proposed including drilling and tapping a plug into the horizontal passage in the top lift cover.

I came up with a reversible alternative I would like to get feedback on.

My thought was to trace a top cover or pump housing gasket on a piece of sheet metal. The metal would be cut out to duplicate a normal gasket with the exception that the passage for the hydraulics would be left solid instead of being drilled. This would block the fluid at that point. In either case (top or bottom casting)you could tap off the pressure port on the front right of the pump casting pass it through an arrangement to control valves and re introduce it through the plugged passage on the right of the lift cover. Return would most likely be through a modified transmission filler plug.

Does anyone see any issues with this. I wonder about the thickness of the blanked-off "gasket" causing problems with correct operation of the control valve linkage. I would forsee wanting to retain the original 3PH operation via one of the external valving configurations. Any guesses on thickness of sheet to effectively block the pressure stream without rupture?

If all you want do is to block the oil from entering the top cover, remove the cover,cut a thread in the port,screw in a blanking plug coated with lock and seal compound,use an Allen wrench type plug,should you ever want to put it back to standard just remove the plug.

Well the stand tube can take the pressure, so the same thickness as it's made from would probably work OK. I don't know what thickness it is but by memory I would guess 20 gauge or so.
The control valve's "handle" that connects to the control fork, is attached to the control valve itself via a flexible spring arrangement. For this reason I think you'll be OK on this front (though you will now need two paper gaskets instead of one, which will also add a bit more thickness).
I had thought of drilling and tapping the top passageway as you mention, but later thought of (or maybe read somewhere) a more reversible version of that approach: take out the upper right plug (if you tractor has that), and tap pipe threads farther in i.e. past the point where the hydraulic fluid enters the top cover. Then put a plug in on the cylinder side of the stand tube, and take your output where the outer plug was fitted. Then re-route to either your external cylinder, or back in through the upper left plug to operate the internal cylinder.

I hadn't thought about duplicating the thickness of the tube. Tapping farther into the existing top port seems easier if it will provide an adequate seal (i.e no bleed through at the tip or rear of the pipe plug) Have you actually done this or are you in pondering mode like me?

No I haven't done it all, just pondering. I did have external hydraulics but it was set up where the internal cylinder was operating in parallel with the external, and I had to chain down the rear arms. Quite unsatisfactory, I thought. Had the chains break once and as they flew past my ear I thought there must be a better way - since then I haven't got back to it.

I have developed and sell a kit that allows you to have live hydraulics on the Ferguson system lift. With it you can still use the three point hitch even when the clutch pedal is depressed and disengaged and with the PTO standing still. It can also be used with the PTO turning too.

You can use any number of open face control valves to run anything hydraulic such as a front loader or snow plow etc. You can use the loader/showplow at the same time you are using the three point hitch without having to tie the lift down etc.

No drilling or tapping or welding or changine of any part of the original design of the tractor is required.

More than I wanted to spend right now for the small task of controlling a top link. If I had a loader I might think about the external pump approach.
