TO-20 transmission (1948?)

I have a TO tractor with a 1948 serial number. However, the specs I see posted here show a 4 speed transmission and this one has 3 speeds forward. the castings all have TO numbers cast in and the serial number plate is very clear. Is this some odd variant or am I missing something? The link below just does not quite describe my tractor. It has a single master brake pedal and then one on each side for each rear wheel back under the seat. Maybe somebody dropped some Ford parts in it, but that seems unlikely.

It is also stuck in first gear (at first it would not stay in first, now it insists). I am new to tractors (at least their insides). I have ordered some manuals. In the meantime, any advice or suggestions are welcome. I have read the posts about nudging things back in place via the oil fill hole, but I have not located anything that wants to be nudged yet.

You're wise to avoid prying around until you have the proper manuals. Parts are expensive to buy and replace in the transmission/ hydraulics/ differential area. The shift pattern should be: forward and left for first, back and left for second, forward center for third, back center for fourth, forward right for starting, back right for reverse. You might get some ideas from Big Deans website.

Thanks! Big Dean's page was a help. It was just enough to inspire me. Somehow I had forgotten that the left slider goes with the shift lever to the right. Silly omission. In any case, very littel force was needed once I found the right spot to nudge.

And yes, there are 4 speeds. Another look and it was obvious. Never trust an engineer to see the obvious.

Now if only I could find where hte movers put my socket wrenches.....
