TO-35 only runs with full choke

My TO-35 runs great except that I have to have the choke full-on. I have verified that the linkage/butterfly are working properly. Once the tractor is started and warmed up, the choke must be all the way out to keep running. I have tried adjusting the main jet and idle air in many different configurations, but no help (I am back at the original settings of idle air - 2 turns open, main jet 1-1/2 turns open).

I've got fuel to the carburetor, good spark, and proper oil level in the air cleaner.

Any ideas or suggestions???

I travel several days a week, so be patient as I will try to check/change/experiment any suggestions as quickly as I can.

Thanks in advance. Brian

I had same problem. Thought everything was okay, but finally replaced the coil and that cured it. It appears that an over-rich mixture is needed when you have a weak spark. I've found this true on several tractors. In one case they were using the original 6 volt coil with a 12 volt system and no resister. I assume it got too hot after a few minutes and started shorting out. They also reversed the battery, but not the coil. Got a 12 volt coil, and installed it the right way, and so far so good.

I had the same problem in an old Willy's and it drove me nuts!. The old gas had varnished and clogged the jets. Less gas passing thru, less air needed. I too thought air leak, timing, etc, and I had missed that jet on the first takedown. Take the carb apart and inspect and clean. I would be almost cetrain a clogged jet is your problem.

Brian: By Chance is the Fuel in the tractor more than 6 months old? With the low emission fuels we have to buy today, all the things in the fuel that make our tractors run well, leaves the fuel in vapors really fast nowadays. This can lead to having to pull the choke on your TO-35 to make it run something close to normal. Let this board know what you find out. Gregg

There was about 3-4 gallons of old gas in the tank. I topped-off the tank with 10 gallons of fresh gas. Would this be enough old gas to cause a problem?

Based on what you said I doubt it is an old gas problem. My guess is you have an air leak somewhere that is causing the mixture to be lean without the choke on to compensate.

If you have a marvel-schleiber(sp?) carb you might want to crack it open and look at the jet thats in the bottom middle - sorry i forget it's name - I had a similar problem - due to a huge rust nugget stuck in that passage. Good luck.
