I Have an early 50's TO-20, it has a front loader on it which has always worked fine. The other day it just quit. I checked the PTO it was running, the oil level is up, the three point hitch would go up and down but if I stood on the lower arms it would not raise me. Next I took the line off the case behind the transmisson that goes to the loader valve. The pressure was 40 PSI regardless of RPM. I don't have a repair book and I am wondering if someone can tell me about the pumps on these machines?? Is there a relief valve I can get to? Looks like I remove the case cover behind the transmission, after taking the lower hoist arms off? Thanks

It sound to me like you lost a seal on the pump, or you have a blockage pluging up one of your valves. How old is the oil in the rear end? Is there a layer of grime or sluge in the bottom of the case? If so you can save yourself a lot of time and hassel by useing some Lubie's Sump Cleaner. What you do is drain the rear end pour in the Lubie's , duluted with water, and let it run for about five minutes. Then drain and flush with water. It is available from Zep Manufactures telephone number 1-800-313-8439. I had a simular problem with my Ferguson, and the above problem solved it.

Kevin,
The relief valve is located at the back side of the internal pump. The manual I have says to remove the side cover that has the dipstick. You should be able to remove the side cover without oil loss since the fluid level is lower than the hole. With the tractor running the pump on and an implement on the 3pt pull the quadrant lever to the up position while watching the valve to see if it leaks. If the valve leaks I suggest that you purchase a shop manual and or a rebuild video since you need to remove the pump to replace the valve. Try the link below for parts and manuals
Good luck

I'm confused. Did the front end loader and the 3point quit? They both run off their own pumps. The loader off the pump on the front of the engine and the 3 point from an internal pump in the PTO. Please clarify.

This TO-20 has the PTO and front loader running off the same pump. The Loader valve is supplied by a hose that comes off the case near the top, under the seat and above the dipstick.

Hi Kevin, Was the temps below freezing when you found your hydraulic failure? You might have a buildup of water and crud in your rear end covering your oil intake. There is a very good hydraulic pump video by JS Productions that will take you step by step through a pump overhaul. I have one. Let me know if you would like their address.
