I just purchased this to.30 fergy I'm used to the John Deere B which has a lot of low end power but no 3 pt. This harry seems to be geared to high or loss of power . It has a bad time just pulling a double disk straight ahead up a slight hill ,supose to be 30hp. Old B is 12 HP. Would timing be slow ??? Motor does'nt used oil seems to rev up good . 5 foot brush hog does'nt do all that well either. We had to raise hog up 8 in. for the fergy to handle it,. ANY HELP ??

Thanks for help: Got it running good today adjusted the tappets some were too tight some too loose I set them at .014 . The points were set at .010. I set them at .021. Cleaned sediments bowls, installed new gaskets, adjusted the carb, cleaned the plugs, one had a bent electrobe and adjusted gap to .025. runs like a cadilac. It's got power now.Still really don't know about the timing. I turned motor to no. 1 where points just breaking, and it was pointing at 5 degrease on flywheel inspection hole.

Check the spark plug wiring order 1-3-4-2, counter clockwise. If two are out of order, they could be firing on the intake and causing the popping you described. At no load, it would not be very noticable.

Thanks for the help: My son thought maybe because the tire are loaded it bogges down. It has writting under hood that it had valve job done in 1996. Up hill seem to be the worse. It starts good cold, not to good warm. WE had the hog on back yesterday, 5 ft. just cutting weeds and hay, bogged down on slight inclines, started popping thru carb ,losing power, had cut PTO. off before it stalled. Had the brush hog set up about 8-10 inches .Motor revs up good ,don't miss.doesn't smoke. Thanks for help!!

I had the same problem with my TED 20 - popping through the carb and loss of power. Popping was traced to air leaks at the gasket where the carb joins the inlet manifold, and the power loss was valve clearance (I'd forgotten the old maxim about letting the tappets rattle a bit, and was going for a quiet engine). A double gasket plus gasket sealer and a reset on the valves should get you out of trouble. Set your timing for TDC if you're ploughing (plowing) or doing other heavy work. Thinking about it, I leave mine on TDC the whole time.

Good luck.

Should be plenty of engine for what you are doing. As Ray says, the gears are a little higher than some, but that wouldn't cause all the issues you have. You may be correct about the timing, as that might well be the problem, assuming points and plugs are good.

I've always thought the gearing was rather high myself. The owners manual specifies using 2 gear for plowing. I can pull my 2-14" H.Ferguson plows in 2 gear satisfactorily at 2/3 throttle - unless clay is encountered. Then, the only recourse is raising the plows enough to regain traction. The engine usually doesn't run out of power though. I suggest a through maintaince session to reset the carb + fuel delivery system, ignition system, and reset valve tappet clearence.
