my ferguson 20 85 needs one piston is there a measurement of the gap betwen the ring and the piston ring grove and also some pistons have three compresion rings and some only have two will this make any differance in compresion ?

Here is the width of the grooves:

Top and second: 0.0797"-0.0807"
Third: 0.1885-0.1895"
Fourth: 0.157-0.158"

Width of rings is:

Top and second: 0.0777-0.0787"
Third: 0.1865 - 0.1875"
Fourth: 0.155"-.156"

thanks Jim I took those measurments on my copresion rings I have .007 gap instead of the the .003 is this piston scrap or will new rings give me moderate sirvice?

I guess you have to figure out if it's the groove that's too wide or the rings that are too narrow. I have a worn out set and measured them, and found that both were out of spec, but most of the slop was due to the piston groove being too wide.
I would keep hunting around for someone that might have a good piston, who has replaced the whole set. Or, replace the whole set yourself, but of course now you're into much bigger money. If you go that route, you can get far lower prices from a British car parts supplier than a tractor place. Get intouch if this is what ends up happening.
