When I took both rear wheels off for the scraping, painting and surveying the previous owner's neglect, I was much surprised to find no fluid in the rear tires. I hope to some day purchase a finish mower to maybe shorten my mowing time. Will the additional weight caused by the fluid cause my wheels to cut in to the turf too much? Will I sacrifice traction (using scraper blade to move snow, or plowing garden) if I don't add the fluid? I have to get one of the tires replaced anyway -- lot of cracks, dry rot, tread going in the wrong direction and very slowly losing air. Any advice out there??

If you decide to use fluid, demand the new stuff. It's non-corrosive, non-toxic, but is similar to Calcium Chloride otherwise.

I think fluid in the rear tires helps traction quite a bit for things like plowing and if you have a front loader. For mowing it may not be necessary in most locations.

Some don't like to fill tires but I do. I gain another 1,400 lbs (over 50 gals per tire) on the rear for traction with my 18.4 X 16 tires on my Massey for traction. The extra weight helps alot for pulling and getting traction on ice with chains. My chains weight 200 lbs also but I could not do my drive way with out them due to the grade of it. If your tubes are good and valve stems don't leak you will have no problem. It is when they leak and are not repaired fast you get the rust on the rims. Rims also rust with out fluid when mud and dirt is left on them for long times wet. I wash off my rims when I put the tractor up after working it in the muddy stuff only takes a few minuites of time to do. I also don't leave dirt piled up on top of the fender mounts to stay wet and rust out the bottom part of the fender. A little TLC with these tractors goes a long way to keeping them looking good over the years. Mark H.

Dale-
I have a TO30 and have never put fluid in the rear tires. I run a bush hog, a finish mower, a plow, and a scraper blade without any problems. In the winter time, I do put chains on the rear tires, and I would recommend that. This website is where I bought my chains:

My property is somewhat hilly, and I have never had a traction problem. By the way, running a finish mower with a Fergie is such a delight, hope you get one some day.
