The plate on the hood says Ferguson, but that's all I know for certain about this beautiful beast. The engine plate is gone and I can't identify any other markings that would bring my search to an end.

I pulled the head to do a valve job and the valve springs are retained with a pin through the valve stem. This would indicate that it's a Ferguson rather than a 9N, right? So I've narrowed things down considerably but before I can order a head rebuild kit, I gotta know what motor is in it. Do any of you Tractorphiles know of a way to identify my motor without a serial #?

Thanks for your time and happy plowing/woodsplitting/chasing the neighbor's cat/etc....

The H. Ferguson TO20 has Z120 (120 CI) cast on the block just above the distributor. The TO30 has Z129 (129 CI) in the same place. I haven't tried it, but someone long ago posted that if you copy all the casting numbers from the engine, transmission housing, differental housing etc., then visit a MF dealer, you may get them to look up the mfg. year.

If the engine has overhead valves(valves in head), it's not a Ford as Ford had a flat head engine (valves in block).

Please post any casting numbers on the left side of the engine and on the rear axle. Does the rear axle have HF, MHF, or MF casting logo? Is the oil filter in the oil pan or is the filter casing on the right side of the engine? On the transmission, is one of the positions for the shift lever marked with an "S"? If you will post answer's to these questions, it will help narrow down the choices.
