I've been having problems the last 2 times with a dead battery and have noticed that the ammeter had not been showing much charging indication. I tightened the fan belt to specs and saw no apparent improvement. I have recently had generator repapired and voltage regulator checked out OK. Question? How closely are RPMs tied to the charging? If I really rev up the engine to almost maximum rpms the ammeter wavers and then shows charging, to at least +15 amps, almost as if it had been stuck and broke free. However, I do not run the tractor usually at these high rpms when using a bushhog for instance, so there is not much time for it to recharge. Any thoughts on this matter? Thanks in advance.

I would think your voltage regulator is not working right. I should show a charge at low or high rpm on your amp gauge. On the other hand your generator could be on its last leg. If you have a VOM, check the volts right at the gererator. As you increase the rpm they should go up. Hope this helps.
