Starter on my to-30 started to make noise so I unbolted it from its mount only to find the top casing in two peices. It appears that the bendix went too far forward and broke casting. My question , why? The original was broke too and when I was able to locate another,rebuilt, it had a brand new casting on it. The starter had no gasket, just metal to metal. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to eliminate the breakage before I install the new one? Help me if you can..... ....Thanks..... Kirby

One known cause is the timing is too advanced, causing kickbacks that break the starter nose.

If you accidentally engage the starter while the tractor is running you might break it. I also think its possible if you have a 12 volt conversion for the starter to engage harder than it would on a 6V system, stressing the nose piece more, but I may be wrong on that... There is no gasket to mount my starter either, just metal on metal at the bell housing. Dan

My TO 30 is on 12 volt. My starter nose cone broke. I had it welded and it broke again. Found another nose cone. Yes,it could be timing. I had a friend help me and we timed it by the I&T manual. I put shims beyween the starter and motor flange. We made sure the bolts were tight. Have not had any trouble since. We did this some time within the last year.

Am certain that the timing is right where it should be as the tractor usually starts at first crank, motor purrs lake a kitten. Please explain more about the shims you used and where you placed them. The new rebuilt starters from Dixie Inc all have new castings (nose pieces) on them and am afraid the all are cast in some third world country where quality is a little known word. The starters themselves are of very high quality for the money. thanks again..... ..... ....Kirby

I cut shims from a pop can.(cant drink beer any more) The shims go between the the starter flange and the flywheel housing. I added shims because it looked like the starter gear was going in too far and hitting the flywheel. I just used one thickness for the shims.

I would still check timming. If you use the I&T manuel method you will need a helper. Preferably someone who is familiar with that type of work.
