my to 20 gets hot after each use when i shut it down it is blowing steam out the over flow tube of the radiator before each use i have to fill the radiator up with water again as it is almost empty i have replaced the water pump and radiator cap already any help is needed

my TO-20 was doing the same thing.i took the radiator out and had it roded and that solved the problem.it cost me 50.00 bucks but i live in texas and i didnt want to have to look for a new block,good luck

I had the same thing with my Fergie, it didn't like hard work. I tried all the usuals, thermostat etc. but had to strip the radiator in the end. For the small cost of a thermostat, don't muck around with the old one and make sure you don't leave it out as technical advice is that modern stats help cooling. I removed the rad, quite easy if you remove the hood, and unsoldered the top with a butane torch. I found that a flat dipstick from an old car was ideal to push down the cooling tubes. Be gentle and have patience, it works in the end. I never had overheating problems after this. You will find your oil pressure will be a bit better as engine runs cooler. Oil pressure is generally low on the Fergie anyway, the book says this is normal.

Most definately sounds line a Thermostat issue. Sounds like it is sticking closed until the pressure builds high enough to blow it open. Easy to replace, just remember the thermostat cover is cast and breaks pretty easily. I would pre-treat the bolts with a good penetrating oil to keep from breaking them off (this would be a bad thing).

You've gotten good advice so far. Also, check your timing. If your timing is too far advanced, the engine will run hot. Also, check your spark plugs. If they are white, the carb is running too lean, and that can also cause it to run hot.

Don't continue to operate your tractor this way or next you'll be searching for a way to repair a cracked block. Cleaning the radiator of chaff, leaves, and other stuff sucked onto the radiator by the fan blade is vital to cooling. Use water/air pressure to clean out the radiator fins from the back side. Backflushing the radiator with a garden hose is another easy-to-do item; this will wash the scale and corrosion off the top of the cooling passages. Remove the thermostat as Jim says to determine if it is the problem.

I also have an overheating problem. When I checked the thermostst, I discovered I did not have one, so I ordered one from this site. The top radiator hose was also very worn and needs replacing. How do I attach the thermostat to the radiator hose?
