What is Tractor Vaporising Oil? Why and how is it used? I was at Ferguson site and they offered several recipes to make TVO with no explanation of its use. I am just curious about this, Thanks

Terry, Because petrol has always been very expensive, (mainly due to Govt taxation), in the U.K. petrol/paraffin engines were developed as an economic substitute to the purely petrol engine. The engine is started on petrol and run until it reaches working temperature. The engine is then switched over to run on T.V.O. which, as you've seen from the Ferguson web site is a mixture of paraffin, and low octane petrol. The ferguson TED tractor, introduced in 1949 and built until 1956 was fitted with such an engine, and Ferguson marketed kits whereby a TEA (purely petrol) could be converted to run on T.V.O.

Terry,

I believe TVO is a parrafin based fuel. Harry Ferguson's design and others was created out of need for an alternative fuel during WWII because of gasoline rationing.
