Need TO30 advice -QUICK

Hi all:
As noted above I've got a TO30 that I currently use to power a 5 ft Howse brushhog to cut about 5 or 6 acres of grass fields and pasture. The tractor is a good runner - certainly not mint, but strong enough. The cutter does a decent job too, but we'd like something that would leave a little nicer cut for some areas. Used finish mowers are few and far between; new ones are out of my price range. I've got an opportunity to buy a set of used golf course mowers; the gang reel type with ground-driven blades. It's a five-reel set, two in front and three in back, but could be used with just the two in front and one in back. It's an older set, but looks to be in pretty good shape, used sparingly on an older gentleman's property for the last ten or so years, and stored in a garage when not in use. He wants $650 for the set. To anyone who is familiar with these, I ask: 1) Is that a good price? 2) Can a TO30 handle something like this? Could it pull it with the speed necessary to put enough spin on the reels to get a good cut? 3) Is this type of mower practical for doing fields and pastures, or is it more suited for longer stretches of straight-ahead mowing like you'd do on a golf course fairway? Lastly, is there anything else I should consider when making a decision? Thanks much.

Jim,
Maryland

Larry is correct it won't work well for what I blieve you wan't to do. That is a real good price though, I would like to find a set in Michigan for that price.

Hello again:
Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I painted too bleak a picture of what I expect this equipment to do. I doubt that I will ever cut my horse pastures with it. I'll stick with the brushhog for that, not that they need cutting that often anyway. What I want is something that will leave a nice "finish" cut on the acreage around my house. I could use my Lowe's garden tractor, but a 46 inch deck just doesn't get it done in a timely manner. And it does labor in higher grass. The brushhog won't cut very low and doesn't leave it very even. My main concerns were whether the Ferguson would have enough juice to pull the gang reel set, and if it would be practical for cutting home acreage where you have to slow down to make turns and manuever around things. Or if it's just more suited for making straight-line cuts like on a golf course, then maybe I'll just pass on it. Any more thoughts?

If You plan to use the gang reel mower for around the house yes the fergy will have noproblem pulling it. As long as you don't have to many trees and shrubs to mow around. You could break it down to just three reels and pull it with your Lowes tractor. That is a good price for a gang mower.

My guess is that these reel mowers would not work well on pasture, with heavier grass. They're meant for golf courses and the like.

I would suggest that you get a new set of blades for your rotary cutter - you would be surprised at how well it will cut with sharp blades! Then you can have the old set sharpened, and replace them when the new ones start getting dull. I bought a pair of brand new blades for my 5' brush hog at a local farm store for under $20! A Lot cheaper than $650 for a mower...

Good luck!

Jim, A reel mower will not cut anything higher than the centerline of the reel, the weeds, grass, dandilions, etc. will just bend forward and the reel mower ride over them. That is why rotary lawn mowers were invented, to solve the rideover problem. Tractor rotary cutters evolved from rotary lawn mowers in the early 1950's. Save your money and take Larrys advice to buy new blades for your present cutter. You will get a much smoother cut if you use first gear and 2/3 throttle(540 PTO RPM) on your TO30. Blade(sharp) tip speed and tractor ground speed determine the quality of your work.
