Trouble installing starter??

When I removed the start out of my TO35 I noticed it came out tight (had to jiggle around to get out). The reason is that the distributor is straight out from where the starter is. This makes it impossible to slide the starter straight back into the hole to join up with the flywheel. Is there a trick to getting this back in? I have tried every angle I could, removed the distributor, but even the piece of cast it sits on prevents sliding the starter straight in. I kinda think this starter is not what should be there and that somehow the person before me was lucky enough to get it in. Of you were measure from where it meets the engine to the outter part of starter mine is 8 1/2 inches, is that a common size for a TO35?

The starter is finally back in. I give all credit to my wife. I was getting fed up and asked for her advise. After a while of trying things she was able to get the starter back in. Don't ever take the starter out of a TO 35 unless you have to. I have spent way to much time trying to what should be simple.

I have measured the tailshaft on my starter and it is 3 1/2 inches from where starter meets the housing to end of tailshaft. If anyone has a starter sitting on a workbench they could measure I would appreciate knowing what it shoud measure for a Z134 engine. The tailshaft is hitting on the flywheel because of the angle I have to put it in. I gotta believe if it were 1 inch shorter it would not be a problem, but than would it work?

Terry: I had a similar problem,with my 1959 T0-35 (Z-134)a few years back. My Starter drive spring broke and was(the small starter drive gear) banging very hard into the starter cast iron tailshaft and cracking/breaking it. It took 3 ruined tailshafts before I caught on what was causing the problem. (Broken Spring)On the first change the starter came off with out removing the Dist, found a good used tailshaft (short length)It went right on, broke it in 5 starts,Got another tailshaft (used)It was Longer,had to remove dist. Could not install at all, I really dont know what the difference was,but no matter it would not bolt up.(for a Z-145 engine?)Then I found another LONG tailshaft (they were getting hard to find,I could not find any more short ones)bolted it to the starter,and installed on tractor,(after fixing starter drive)It was a real tight fit,plus had to reroute starter cable so it would fit starter lug.(it was moved forward If/since you pulled Dist. make sure you properly set timing.Please let us know what find out.
