I have just received my grandfathers to30 and noticed that the hydr. oil is low. I bought a maint. book and it doesnt say what kind to use or where to put it. which leads to another question. there is a small plug on the steering housing and a large cap on the gear shifting plate which I suppose would be the fill hole but I want to be sure. I am still clueless to the small plug on the steering gear housing. I would apprieciate any help. thanks

Ken has given you great advice. The 1103 mineral oil is also the same as GL-1 gear oil. NOT the same as GL-5. When you drain, open the small drain first, etc. You may not get everything out, as gunk will accumulate, so it may not take 6 gals. to refill. Put in 5 and let it sit awhile and then check the level. As for the other subject, the steering box takes 90 wt. oil too, as I recall, and that is the small plug you mentioned. The steering box tends to leak at the seals for the arms, so don't overfill.

I use M1103 Mineral Oil from my Massey Dealer. The manual recommends this (6 US gallons). However there is a lot of good material to sift through if you type in mineral oil in the search portion of this website. That would be put in the large cap by the way, and to drain properly, there are 3 different plugs on the underneath side to remove. Also good discussion archives on steering gear oil. Ken
