TO 20 with extra gearbox

I recently attended the Buckley (Mich) steam and tractor show.

There was a 1950 TO 20 there with an extra gearbox between the engine and the regular transmission. It certainly looked llike a factory product. The wheelbase was elongated to accomodate this.

Another guy there told me this was an aux gear, like a transfer case, to further reduce the gear ratios. He said it was a factory option.

Has anyone got information about these? What were they called, were they really factory built , how many were built etc?

if the wheel base was lenghtened it may have been a "howard reduction unit". i don't know much about this unit except that it gave the tractor a creeper gear in order to use a rototiller or other such pto driven implement where extreme slow tractor speed was necessary.

I believe what you saw was the Sherman Transmission option. The was a cable to engage these gears, and there was an S on the shifting gearbox just below reverse gear position.

I am not familiar with the Sherman transmission. However this one had a lever very similar to the PTO lever that was located on the left side of the tractor between the engine and normal gearbox. It looked like it just had two positions.

Our TO-20 is set up exactly the way you describe with the Hi-Lo Lever on the left side. In addition some of the tractors that were set up this way had a round tin plate under the main steering wheel nut that was stamped with "This Tractor is Equiped with the Sherman Step Down - Step Up Transmission". This TO-20 has been in our family for years. The story is that my Grandfather traded a Ford 8N for it when it was a year old. At the time it had the Sherman box on it and we were always under the impression that this was an after-market add-on that was installed by the dealer. (I hope I've got the details close to right...My dad is actually the Ferguson Nut and could be more specific on this stuff).

I am looking for information on an auxiliary transmission for a fergueson. The person who needs to know has purchased this at an auction and needs to know if complete, and installation instructions. On the part it shows "Rotray Hoes of England Pat No. 657074 and also #14858. I would appreciate any information on it.
