TO 20 head rebuild story

Had the head reworked on my 1950 TO 20. New springs, valve seats, couple new valves, head surfaced, rubber "umbrella" type valve seals, guides in good shape, reinstalled original cup & pin retainers. After couple hours operation, started missing, also smoking quite a bit too. Went through everything but suspected the worse, sure enough, one of the original type retainers broke off at the top and dropped a valve--no damage internally, also noticed raw oil setting on top of each cylinder, umbrella seals not working. Took head back to shop, told me that one does not know how long the old stuff will last--new springs too much for the old type retainers. So, he did what he should have done in the first place--machined top of valves for split-ring type retainers on all valves and installed new teflon type oil seals--runs good and no longer "smokes"--total parts and labor about $400 for machine shop work and another $20 for head gasket, plus my time. Another point, oil baffle inside of valve cover for the breather pipe was plugged tight with rust and gunk--breather was not breathing. I read many stories about the old girls loosing power after some time operating, this may have a little to do with it. Hope this helps others along the way. Dave.

Hey Dave

Thanks for the info. My book shows that only the intake valves have the pin retainers. The exhaust valves have the normal retainers.
