I am in the process of rewiring my 1952 to-30. I took tried to take the nut of the starter to replace the lead to the battery and the bolt spun and would not come off. I did manage to get the nut off but the starter will not work now. Its rusted through around the nut. Apparntly not making contact anymore. Anyway, i looked in my manual and the starter switch is not the one with the linkage. It is simply a push button that goes down into the case. Is this normal and does anyone have any idea where i can get one? Thanks for your help.

Oops,
I think i figured the linkage problem. Thats attached to the plate with 4 bolts right? And the actual starter switch simply bolts right the to top of that plate with 2 bolts?

You're right! the linkage is inside the transmission case, and the gearshift lever pushes up on the switch button-kinda like the reverse of the old foot starter buttons. NAPA, and Carquest both carry the switches. You just bolt it on as you discovered. When you turned the nut on the terminal, the square head(contact) inside the switch likely cut through the cardboard insulation and grounded to the case. When you get a new one, disassemle the old one and see how it's made. You will then know why not to over tighten the nuts. I went so far as to saw a slot in the end of the stud to enable holding it still with a screwdriver while tightening/loosening the nut to avoid ruining another switch.

Thanks. I found one at the massey dealer for 11 bucks this morning. (what a relief) My problem was I could not get the cables off. had to do as you said, put a slot in and hold it with a screwdriver. It was all rusted out when i did get the cables off. Possibly the cure for my starting problems. What got me confused is the picture in my manual does not seem to be the same. I was wondering if someone changed something on the tractor but now i thing the pic is wrong. Thx for the help
