Well, I determined i have a 6 volt system and bought a 6 volt battery. It starts fine for 4 or 5 times, then the battery just does not seem to have the juice to start it. charge i for an hour and it fires right up. The battery will turn the motor over what seems plenty fast enough to start it but it wont unless freshly recharged. Any ideas? How can i tell if the battery is getting charged? amp meter is reading negative when running( pos when starting). Im assuming that is the reading off the alternator. Thanks for all your help. This is all new to me and im having a blast learning all this stuff.

Harry Ferguson tractors are positive ground, that's why the ammeter reads backwards when cranking the engine. Reroute your battery cables (they must be "0" gauge, not the wimpy 6 gauge used for 12V systems) so the negative cable is connected to the starter switch and the positive cable is connected to the dash panel(original position), for a better connection you may connect it to a starter mounting bolt. The dash connection loses continuity because of years of rust, dirt, loose bolts, and old paint etc., where it is mounted to the rest of the tractor.
