Hi guys. This will be a long post, sorry for the inconvenience. Just came into possession of my grandads 1952 to 30. Basically believe it to be very sound tractor. Will need lots of small things to restore. When using it tonight, just quit very unexpectedly. Just like you had switched off the ignition or the fuel. Had operated the tractor for approximately 90 minutes when this occurred. Since it doesn't have a working temp gauge, the first thing that went through my mind was overheated and the bad news associated with that, but I could place my hand on and leave it on the radiator hoses, and could very nearly do the same with the engine block so it was not overheated. Tried the starter and tractor readily turned over, but would not start. I know this is old equipment, and the two things that went through my mind was coil or vapor lock. Anybody had any experience of this sort with their TO30? Where is a good supplier for a temp gauge ( don't want that scare again ). The tractor is still 6Volt if that matters. Wire and sensor on water pump appear OK, but lens and gauge shot. Am getting ready to change engine and Diff/Hyd oil. From some previous posts looks like there should be 3 drain plugs for the Diff/Hyd, but only 1 place to fill. Picked up my 6 gallons of the GL1 to do it. Any other basic info anyone willing to share? I have 2 of those tractors and one of them I just got. The first thing that you should check is the carburator and the gas line. The best place to get the gauge would be from Ford and you can get the kind to fit it or you could get one from an 8n or 9n Ford.

steve,just saw your posting, i have a mostly complete t o 30 on my farm. it has many usefull parts left on it. it is in three pieces.it has no tires or gas tank or radiator. if you need any parts i will let you have them for a fair price.i can send pictures of something you may be intersted in, it just may take a day or two as it is not at my home. good luck. randy

my guess is either coil or condensor - a heat problem, especially if it restarts after a cool down.

i got a temp gauge from PITTSBURG TRACTORAT 903-856-6548 it was the original unit and putting it in was easy email me if you get stuck i am a new t-30 owner also and learning a lot from this site

Buying manuals is probaly the best thing to do.
Jensale also sells owner, service and parts manuals. Also Yesterday's Tractor web site sells video tape of tune up for MF35 (MF135?)but most applies to the TO-30 also. Tape has information on tune up, carb rebuild and several other small maintence items. I bought a temp guage from my local auto parts store for $13. I know it is not original, but I have a working TO-30 not a show piece. My tractor did not hardly get the temp guage off the peg at 130 after mowing several hours in 90-95 degree heat.

Drain the fluid from the two small plugs first. Five or six gallons comes out of the big plug fast. I know! :)

In reading some of my responses today, one thing I forgot to include in my original description is that the tractor fired right back up in about 20 minutes. That was what made me think coil or vapor lock. steve

Sounds like you have things under control. I think vapor lock is very unlikely. Probably a wire as Ray says. Could be trash in gas, but that usually doesn't cut off super sudden. Bad coil usually goes after about 5-10 minutes, not 90 minutes, so that isn't too likely in this case.

Steve, The best advice I can offer, is to buy an owners manual from a MF dealer. The manual contains a wealth of information for maintance and adjustments. It'll be the best money you spend on your tractor. Your problem with the engine dying could be a shorted wire. Check the wire from the points to the coil, especially where it passes through the dist. housing. The old wiring eventually just wears out, through insulation deteriorating, or the wire itself corroding and losing continuity. Trace all primary wiring and inspect it for these problems.
