Positive ground?

Bought a 1952 to30 last night. after 3rd start, the battery died. Unfortunatly, i forgot to look what side was the positive. Its a 12 volt battery. i think the positive grounded to just below the shifter. What is the best way to tell if this is correct. what i thought was negative, goes to a block and from there, splits to the negative on the starter and what appears to be a line to the key. any help is appreciated. Is it normal to have a 12 volt positive ground?

If it has a generator they usually hae 6v or 12v stamped on the casing somewhere. The starter motor might have 6v or 12v stamped on it too. With the battery dying like you say, it could be that it's a 6v charging system not charging that 12v battery. Of course it could be a totally different problem.
When you first started it, did it crank over really fast?

Well, I did find out its positive ground. Unfortunately, im not sure if its supposed to be 6 or 12 volts. It had a 12 but the previous owner was supprised. How can i tell what should be in there.

Well, Chris, 6 volts in these tractors would normally be positive ground, and if they have been converted to 12 volts they would normally be negative ground. Does the tractor have a generator (usually 6 volts unless it has been modified) or an alternator (12 volts)? Most of the time when they are converted to 12 volts, folks put an alternator on them, but it is possible to upgrade the generator instead. It seems like the seller / owner should know, but I guess there are circumstances where he might not.

im guessing the seller stuck a 12 volt in there just to sell it and he isnt giving me any more info. I told me it wasnt converted to his knowledge and isnt saying why it had a 12 volt in it. I just want to make sure its a 6 volt system and want to make sure everything is correct. Guess i will have to dertemine if the alternator is 6 volts.

You said "alternator." Is it indeed an alternator? Or is it a generator? The generator of course would probably be original. Have a tractor person look at it with you before you put the wrong battery hook up in it and burn up a coil or whatever. Speaking of the coil, some of them have 6V or 12V on them, and that might be a clue.
