TO-35 PTO seal

I have a TO-35 diesel (serial number 181053 - I think 1958 model) with a leak around the PTO shaft. I took off the plate that goes on over the shaft (it's 3 bolts, not 4) and there is some sort of retainer behind the plate. This retainer will not budge. The shaft is tight, with no sloppy play in it.

Does anyone know how I get this PTO shaft retainer out? It looks to me like it may screw out, but I don't want to mess it up. The only post I've seen says the shaft should come right out when you take the plate off - but mine doesn't budge.

Any help from someone smarter than I am is appreciated. Thanks.

Hey Bud I can't proclaim being smarter but sometimes I do go to bed more enlightened on occasions. ;)

In any case I changed my PTO seals on my TO 35 1958 last month. On mine the shaft wasn't budging neither so I started it with a pipe wrench just so it turned then it came off by pulling and turning at same time with a screwdriver across PTO shaft hole. Now I can't confirm the next part as being the case but do not pull it out too far as I have read somewhere here that once you pull far enough out of the spline it may be next to impossible to realign and insert back the shaft. I had pulled only 4 inches or so and installed new seal. Again I can't validate if it's true or not but the seal is easy to slide back.

Hope it helps. Btw I hope you put your machine on a front downward incline for the oil or have drained it.

Thanks Norm!

I'll give it another try. I've drained the oil, so should be OK there. I even found the seal at a local tractor supply here in Tucson - just couldn't get the old one out. My shaft turns freely, and I tried the screwdriver through the hole to pull on it, so maybe my PTO lever on the left side of the tractor needs to be in another position for the shaft to release?

I do know that the 90 weight mineral oil isn't cheap here (over $40 per 5 gallon bucket) so I don't want to buy any more than I have to.

Thanks again,

Bud

Leave your lever in neutral and perhaps use a long pry bar to pry against your screwdriver it should come with some persuasion.

Good luck
