Boy, was it hot here today! About 96 degrees & humidity so high I practically had to swim out to the Fergie for a last bit of mowing before fall. Normally my girl gets up to 180-190 & hangs tough there, but today after about 45 min she was up at 200, by the time I got to the pole barn she was at 220. I guess my question is: How hot can I run the old girl before I cause serious damage? If she gets too hot should I just leave her in the field until nite comes or is it smarter to get her to the barn where there are tools nearby (more likely where my mechanic can easily pick her up!) Any help is greatly appreciated!

You are keeping that blanket off the front of the radiator, ain't you? The stuff you're mowing will put a matress on there in about an hour of mowing, especially in the tall stuff. I've had to make one pass around a twenty acre field and shut off the tractor and take an air hose and blow the chaff out of the radiator. She'd get hot and boil over if I tried to make two passes around. Best to take a piece of common house screen and tie over front of grill and clean off with a gloved hand (stickers and bugs) and don't refill with water when the engine is real hot...shut her off and wait 30 minutes. Don't try to run her to the barn when shes real hot...shut her off when you first notice it. Also best to keep the blades sharp...makes less work for the engine to do.
All of 'em run a little hotter in this kind of weather...you'll know if it's too hot, it'll boil over. Keep your eye on the gage, 220 shouldn't hurt it. Sometimes you can bring it back to an idle for a few minutes and it will come back down in temperature before shutting it off. August will be worse, it all turns to wood then.

PS Don't use duct tape to hold on the screen, I tried that once and it worked just fine till I pulled the tape off...the paint came off with it.
