I have recently purchased a TEA-20 ser. 403698. when I got the tractor there was no battery in it so I purcashed a 6 volt battery and hooked it up negative ground, should it be positive gound. (generator is not hooked up) The 6 volt battery will start the tractor but not very well I thought the starter may need rebuilding. However I noticed a 12 volt coil. Then I started searching archive messages and found that my tractor may be 12 volts. what should this tractor be 6 volt positive ground or 12 volt and if 12 volt is that positive ground as well. thanks

After serial number 200,000, the TEA20 went to 12 volt, negative ground. I have the MF service manual that covers the British made TEAs where this is clearly spelled out. You can also check on the case of the generator and starter motor; 12v. should be stamped on them too, if they are original.

I think after serial number 200000 12 volt was used so you should have a 12 volt system your starter will have 12V stamped into the casing.

Harry Ferguson tractors were made 6V pos ground systems. Yours may have been converted to 12V from your posted description, and you'll have to determine that by inspecting the generator, coil, and voltage regulator. A properly maintained 6V system will perform just as well as a 12V system under the same conditions. The common mistake is using 12V battery cables (6 ga) on the 6V system ("0" ga); they won't carry sufficient current to turn the starter properly.
