Draft Control Boot Replacement

Have any of you replaced the rubber boot on the draft control assembly? The boot is missing on my TO-35 and water is getting into the transmission case. I removed the draft assembly from the tractor and now need to disassemble it to put the new boot on. To disassemble, the clevis is unscrewed from the shaft that runs inside the spring. I find there is no way in H--- to get a wrench, pliers, fingers, etc. on the shaft to hold it to unscrew the clevis. What am I missing? Any advise?

Thanks guys - I knew I was missing something! Phil, I did not notice that the end of the "shaft" was a rubber plug. I'll look closer and hopefully find that it's indeed rubber and not metal (with no screwdriver slot). David, it's nice to know you were able to stretch the boot over the spring. If all else fails, I'll try that.

Thanks again,
RHS

I did one on my FE35 a few weeks ago. Ideally you should take the control spring assembly apart but you might be able to do it without doing this. Snag is that before you can unscrew the plunger you have to drive out a retaining pin at the clevis end. (I think) I couldn't get mine out and so resorted to stretching the rubber boot over the sping and working it up into position. Its not ideal but it did work. I was using a Vapormatic replacement part but I guess that anything that is less elastic might be a problem.

Hello,

The shaft has a slot on the end of it, so you use a screw driver to stop the shaft turning. To get to the end of the shaft there is a rubber plug which you have to remove from the clevis. Chances are you will need to soak in lubricant for a few days.

Good Luck
