Under the hydraulic pump on the TO-30 is a plate which requires removal of the PTO shaft in order to drop. Due to a lack of my mechanical skills, it would be much easier to simply apply silicone gasket to stop the leak. Is this simply a bad idea, and how hard is it to place the PTO shaft back in place.

This "plate" you speak of is actually the bottom of the hyd. pump. The PTO shaft runs through it to the transmission to obtain power. There is linkage hooked to the pump which must be disconnected prior to removing the bolts holding the pump and "plate" in place. You may loosen the bolts enough to throughly clean the gasket area and sqeeze in silicone gasket maker. Read the article on the YT home page today to familiarize yourself with the proper procedure for using the stuff, otherwise you'll not get a good seal. Take care to not get any of the gasket maker inside the oil holding area or it'll get into the pump and cause problems. You'd be wise to buy a shop manual before attempting to remove the pump or anything major like that.
