While mowing yesterday with my TO30, got a noise from the front of engine (fan area) that sounds like a bolt rolling around inside a tin can. I'm no mechanic but I'm thinking bad water pump. Everything else is normal. Don't have a temp gauge but it didn't seem overhot. Shut down as soon as possible, pushed to shed. At low idle the noise stops but slight increase in throttle and it starts. Do you guys think its the water pump? (or what??) If it is, I have nothing to press the shaft or bearings out with. Can I just remove the whole pump and take for service without pressing or pulling? Any advice, HELP appreciated.

I'd vote for a governor problem, not a water pump. The water pump is nothing more than a shaft driving a metal piece with some short vanes on it. I really cannot see it suddenly making a lot of noise, if it were that bad I'll bet the fan belt would slip off. Easy enough to find out, take the fan belt off see how easily the pump turns, and whether there is any wobble in the shaft, then check the generator, then run it for a few seconds to see if the noise continues.

Good luck!

Others have answered most of your questions and given good advice. Yes, you can remove the whole pump and replace. Not difficult.

Usually if the waterpump is going out, you can loosen up the fanbelt and shake the fan. If it has a lot of play in it-you can be pretty sure that the bearings are going out of it. L8R....Fred OH

take off the fan belt and run it for a minute or two. see if the noise is still there. If it is, it's something else like the governor, If its gone it's either the water pump or the generator.
