TO-20 HELP Throttle Stick keeps wanting to move down (rev up)

I had the governor replaced in my to-20. The reason was because it was reving way up all by itself. I got the tractor back and the first time I used it to disc a little, I noticed that when I opened it up it didn't turn near the rpms it should. So I figured I just needed to do a little fine tuning. I took the pin and carter key out (down by the water pump) and screwed the bracket a little tighter so that it would rev up a little more. When I finally got where the rpms needed to be at full throttle, I noticed when I brought back to idle, it still wants to move itself down and rev up. The throttle rod moves itself. I took it to a Massey Ferguson dealer. after investigating I found they had put a spring like you would put on a screen door attached to the throttle stick and attached to the other end of the console to pull the throttle rod up. I feel ripped off!!! Is there something that should be there besides this jerry rigging to hold the throttle stick in place? The throttle rod used to go nearly to 4 or 5 o'clock now it barely goes to 3. What have these people done to my BABY? To make matters worse, when I push the rod all the way up it wants to shut off.

hi rob, i just swapped out carbs on my to-30, and the the throttle wanted to creep up fast. i adjusted the rod longer at the front end above the alternator about three turns. no creep and the throttle lever is back to the right position. before at low throttle it was at about 12 oclock

Sounds like the repair job was a con job. Buy an owners manual and follow the governor setting procedure in it exactly. The friction plate under the right side of the dash keeps the throttle where you've set it. It is adjusted with the split block and spring on the throttle rod just behind the air cleaner. When you see the setup you'll know how to tighten it to keep the throttle in place(move the block towards the dash to tighten spring pressure). First take it loose and inspect the cork material that acts as a brake pad against the cast friction plate. If the cork is oil soaked or hardened replace it, it's easy to make one with sheet material. Split one side of the new cork and slide it around the throttle rod and glue to the dash side plate. It works well and avoids disassembling the throttle linkage. Hope this helps!

After I posted the original messsage, I took off the oil bath filter and tightened the spring up as much as possible. I also adjusted the throttle by taking the pin out (near the alternator)and screwed the piece tighter. I am making progress but it still wants to creep up when at a low idle. I need to check the cork as you recommended. Thank both of you for your help.

Rob, Let us know you progress and final resolution (specific adjustments). I've been coping with this problem (reving up as I use my tractor. Since I don't use it much I have just delay tinkering with it. Bill H.

I appreciate all the help. I talked to the mechanic who put the spring across the bottom of the dash. He told me that the butterfly on the carb. was nearly worn out, a carb kit won't help because the casing to which the pin on the carb. fits in is what's worn out. I remember the mechanic who rebuilt the engine told me the same thing, he told me he had a hard time getting it to idle. I've priced the carb. and it seems to run $200 to $230 or so. I'm going to try to get by a while without a new if I can. I have continued to adjust the threade rod down by the generator. It is a tedious process of moving it in or out a couple of times and then giving it a test drive with an implement in this case I have a disc harrow and disc up a strip. The trick seems to be adjusting it so that the throttle lever will not increase itself at a slow idle yet having enough rpm's at the high end. I've managed to get it pretty close. Thanks again for the help.

My fan belt was hitting the linkage at full open.
Just a thought . Don't forget the cork disk behind the dash on the linkage.
