PTO Conversion Shaft

Need to replace the PTO seal on my TE20. I see where I can get a 1-3/8" conversion shaft complete. What are the advantages of using this shaft over the present one in the tractor? Are there any problems I will encounter? The second option is to use the shaft that is presently in the tractor. Appreciate your comments. Thanks, Ray

You can get away with the $15 conversion sleeve quite nicely instead of changing the whole thing. Some are better than others and sitck out a bit farther. If you are going to be using the pto a lot the best thing is to get a 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 overrunning clutch conversion rig and you can kill two birds with one stone. You won't be getting pushed ahead by your mower if you want to stop quick and its lots safer for everyone and everything near you. They do make the assembly a few inches longer though and you can't use the original pto cover with it on there, but you can fab one up quickly and easily. Agri supply sells em on line for around $45 and the quality seems fine even though its made in India. I mowed without one for 4 years but wouldn't want to be without it now.

I just replaced it on my TO-30 and it took about 20 minutes including draining part of the tranny. Be aware that if done on level ground you will need to have something to catch the oil that will gush out unless you drain the tranny first. I nosed the front end into a ditch , drained about a gallon or so of fluid and when I unbolted the old shaft very little oil came out.. The new one slid right in. Well worth it to get rid of the adaptor. The only problem I encountered is that the PTO cover no longer fits, I will have to make an extension but that should be easily done with threaded pipe.
