STEERING BOX------OIL??

i was reading the manual for my to-20 it says the steering unit uses transmission oil.is that the same as the mineral oil for the tractor itself or is it transmission fluid like for a car? thanks D.J.

I have a massey ferguson model 88.I mianly use it for haying.I have no manuel.could someone tell me how to drain the fluids and what to replace them with.it appears to me there are 3 areas to drain.1)..the crankcase..2)the rearend and hydralics appear to be one with a dipstick under the seat i cant seam to find the fill hole..3) it looks like transmission and front steering box run on same fluid again I dont know what or how much of each to put in

Steering box uses 80/90w gear oil. Seals will probably leak if it's that low. Little bit of a pain to pull the box to replace them but worth it to me. Good Luck

Only use 80/90WT. straight mineral oil, the additives in other oils will deteriorate the seals and cause problems.This is pointed out in the original owners manual. Lots of guys use the "new, modern oils" and the original seals were not manufactured to withstand the additives. If you've rebuilt everything using new replacement seals then the newer oils are fine to use.

If your seals are shot and the oil keeps drooling down the side there is an easy fix. I found guys who pumped lithium grease into the filler until it is about full. Thats what I did 5 years ago and only refilled it once since. Its quick and easy unlike pulling that damned steering box and arms. Its simply not worth the effort. I have plowed snow when it was well below zero and can't feel any difference. The worst I can say is that there is a brown stain of grease under both arms where they enter the box.
