This refers to the message string I started 6/11 on help with a Gearmore Digger on a T0-20. I'm an amatuer and first tractor owner with a basic home improvement toolbox. Anyone want to help me redo the seals in front of the pto? They must be leaking -- I have this brown oil dripping around the shaft. It half filled the cap when I first opened it. Is this easy or hard? Anyone near the high desert area of S CA want to come over? I am in Phelan, near Victorville. Best, Rob

Everybody is right about what they say about changing the pto seal. Something else you may want to consider is upgrading the pto to 1 3/8 if already not done so.

Well....it depends....ya' got anything good to eat? Oh....wait.....I'm 2,000 miles away..... scratch that!

But seriously, as Joe said- it's an easy job to do. I just did mine.....and I've only had my tractor for a few weeks....and it's my first one.

If you're just changing the seal (as long as the bearings look good when you pull the shaft and there's no wobble/play) it's cheap- about $18 for a new seal.

If the oil that's in there looks gunky or contaminated with water.....or if it smells like gear oil (some people put gear oil in there.....instead of the proper mineral oil), then you might be better off changing the fluid, so that you'll have good clean (and proper) mineral oil in there.

Have fun! (If I still lived up in Bishop, CA. I'd come help ya'!)

Rob,
Good job to get your feet wet fix'n her. Not real hard. If can run the front end into a low trench or dip you won't have to drain all the mineral oil. Just get it below the pto seal. DON"T jack up the rear end because she can twist, the front axle is supported on a pivot pin. Unbolt the four bolts around the seal and slide the shaft out. It's about 2-21/2 foot long. You can then change the seal on the bench or take it to a garage if you're not comfortable with it. When it's done just slide the shaft back in place. You might have to wiggle it a tad as it goes through the pump but ussually just slides in.
One of the easier jobs to do.
Good luck,
Joe

Rob, It is the oil seal on your PTO shaft that is shot. I had the same problem a couple of months ago, and you can do the repair yourself very easily. Just remove the four bolts that hold the PTO retainer housing and your entire PTO shaft should slide right out. Don't forget to put a five gallon bucket under the shaft, as all of your rear transaxle/hydraulic fluid will escape and need replacment after fixing. Additionally, take care not to move the tractor until you make the fix. Your local Massey/Ford dealer will have a complete replacement shaft kit for about $120.00. Or you can spend about the same money to have the old parts pressed off/and new parts pressed on. The replacement shaft just slides right back in, bolt it up, and replace your fluid. Email if you have any other questions.
