Losing power.....and patience!

Yet another question from Mr. MaGoo:

Did a full ignition tune-up on my newly aquired TO-20, and yet it has very little power (up slight hill with bushog, just putters along at full throttle and often will get so low it'll stall out). Governor seems to be working. My next items on the agenda are to adjust the valve clearences, and get a proper rebuilt carb (wrong carb currently on tractor). Engine seems tight- no smoke, etc. (but does have a miss)Anyone have any ideas how I can track down my problem definitively, instead of just educated guesses and trial and error? Am I overlooking something? (Runs a little better w/o pto on, but still doesnt have the power it should) I am new to tractors..... but I've become a huge fan of these little Fergies.....just cant wait to get mine working properly, so that it'll be a good representitive of its' kind!

Thanks everyone! Seems to be a bunch of nice people on this board! (If I get this tractor working properly, I might even change my name to Bubba, and get a pair of bib overalls!)

Mr. MaGoo, Really does sound like fuel. If you cleaned out the fuel bowl make sure it's not air locked. Also check the vent on the gas tank and be sure it's not plugged, maybe take it off and see if that helps. Check oil bath air cleaner and be sure its not plugged. I had one that was full of maple seeds from mice. Try disconnecting it and see if it picks up. Just a few ideas that may not be as obvious. Stick with it. If you just got it you can bet the previous owner abused it or at least didn't preform maint. They are very dependable and can take a lick'n and keep on tick'n. You should be able to throttle it up but if it chuggs under load I'd be suspicious of fuel!
Just a thought and good luck
Joe

Thanks Joe- I've ordered a new carb.....as I know that that's part of the problem (a good part of it, I'll bet)- I got the tractor to run again- did a loittle chug-chug-put-put bushoggin' with it..... parked it for a while, went to start it again, and it almost kicked off....then wouldn't start- no spark now. I dont know what is causing this intermittent spark problem..... but about the only things I havent replaced are the coil, resistor and key switch. I know that the former owner didnt keep up on maintenance.....and jury-rigged a lot of stuff.....so I guess I'll just have to go through everything, slowly but surely, until I get it all straightened out!

Update: I just double checked point gap, and various connections, and made sure I had good fuel flow- now the tractor WONT START!! One thing I noticed though..... just from cranking it a few times, the coil is hot, and the resistor is "ouch" hot- should this be, or have I found my problem..... a bad coil (which was steadily getting worse) and resistor? Thanks everyone, for yourinterest and help!

Could be lots of things, but your symptoms sound to me like they could be indicative of incorrect ignition timing. When you did your tuneup did you set the timing according to the manual? That's what I'd look at first.

Phil- Don't have a manual yet (but it's coming!).....I did play around with the timing a bit....it basically only sounds good in one position (the position it was in when I got the tractor).

Thanks.

Did your full electrical tuneup include plug and distributor and coil wires? When you look at the plugs (which I assume you replaced) do you get any hints, like oily or black soot, etc.? What plugs did you put in it?

Phil. Yes....I replaced everything except the coil. Tractor does have a little more power now than before the tune-up, but still WAY underpowered. The plugs werent fouled.....but they were a bit sooty. I'm tempted to do a compression test. I'm also gonna check the fuel flow for restrictions. And I really suspect the carburetor- except that it has plenty of power and rpm when it's sitting still! Could valve clearence be the culprit? (but it starts right up).

Got the same problem right now, also. New electronic ignition and coil, plugs and wires. Carburetor is clean and adjusted. Runs out of steam going up a hill in low position on the tranny and in first gear.

I'm stumped, too.

As Duner implies, check flow from fuel line to carb. Should pour like man peeing. Also, I still think ignition timing could be issue. When you get the manual, make sure you set that carefully.

Nurse: Put it to sleep??!! I'm just nursing it back to health, after it's shoddy treatment in its' last home! She's doing better already- let her do a little work today!

Phil: Your description of the fuel flow is pretty much what I have.(LOL!) Got her running better with new coil- and set timing by ear. My manual has arrived! I want to set timing as specified....but: What does this 32-degree mark on the flywheel look like? I have a little dot on the flywheel, and approx 180 degrees around from that, there appears to be a line on the outside edge- which is my 32 degree mark? (Come on....I'm almost there!)

Thanks! This forum is GGGGRRrreat!

When my T0 20 runs like it is running out of power every once in awhile for the last 30 years it has been restrictions in the gas tank limiting the fuel flow to the carb.
