Had her tuned up a month ago (rebuilt carburator, points, plugs, etc.) Still had a little miss but not bad. Was mowing when she lost power. Was running but no power under load. Then she died all together & wont start. Found contact on top of rotor broke off. Rotor & shaft wont rotate when turning her over. I'm assuming (not particularly mechanic smart) either broke shaft or sheared pin on gear. Can I find distributor cheaper than $200.00? What's the difference in brands? Would it be feasible to rebuild if it's a sheared pin & how hard to get that gear out?

Had a problem with the distributor on TO-35 and upon observing it as it was running, it was bouncing up and down. Even bent the bracket that holds the distributor down. Reason it was bouncing up and down was the gear on camshaft and the distributor have helical (slanted) gear teeth and the camshaft had end play in it. As the camshaft moved back and forth (from end play) it shoves up or pulls down on the distributor creating the problem. Posted problem on this board and found out that the nut on the end of the camshaft might be loose. Removed the front end of tractor and the timing cover and the nut was clear off. (threads stripped on it) Replaced the nut, $10 at Massey dealer and also replaced the distributor (had about 1/4" of end play) and have had no further problems with it. Camshaft must not have over a few thousandths end play to be right. You'll need a new timing cover gasket and some gasket shellac if you go this way. I suppose you could rebuild the distributor (end play) with shims...but, you'd have to know where to place them so as to put the gear right on centerline with the cam gear...or at least...pretty close.
All of this does bring up a question...what causes the nut to strip? Is it the distributor, governor, lifters or cam bearings? Or is the end play not adequate for the amount of engine expansion when the engine heats up? Or is it "E", all of the above. Inquiring minds would like to know! If this fixes your problem, you can thank Big Dean, he put me onto this. The next thing is what to do to prevent it from happening to others. Fred

TAke it from someone who has bought three distributors within last two months, the distributor cannot be replaced for less than two hundred. Now, as to rebuilding, it might easily be done if you can locate the parts. You may have only sheared the pin the attaches the cog to the shaft at the end of the distributor (if you are lucky). Otherwise, you may be looking at pulling the bottom to find lost pieces. It is easy to pull the distributor, just havr to line it up to set the timing when putting it back together. The real issue you have to deal with is why did the distributor come apart. (the problem I had). I had excessive vibration in the distributor caused by wear in the cam shaft where the cam gear attaches. Better check for vibration in the distributor and get the source of the problem addressed, or you will be buying more than one distributor...
