I wanted to see if this is a normal sound/occurance with others. Not constant but at times when I'm tilling the back property, I hear a loud clacking comming from the tranny. I wear ear plugs, and you can feel it thru the steering wheel. I'm wondering if it has any relationship to the "draft control"? The soil out here is like concrete. It's always made that sound and I'm not panicing, unless one of you explains to me that I should! I just thought I'd toss it out there and see if all is fine & dandy! Thanks. Steve

I have the response control in slow-med position, when I turn it off (pulled up all the way)I do not hear it as much. Steve

You already checked, that the telescopic drive shaft is OK and not too long, so that it cannot move freely? The U-joints make an awful noise when loaded under pressure or in an awkward angle...

The hydraulic system regulates on the suction side of the pump, and if you load the 3pt very hard, it clacks loudly due to cavitation bubbles (vacuum cavities) in the hyd line to the pump. The very same noise as I get using my log splitter on hard dry wood.
If it is just that - no big trouble... If it isn't - big trouble.
Do you have the response control in the slow or fast position when tilling?

Sounds like a chipped tooth on one of the transmission gears to me.If you try another gear, it may not be present. The only way to tell for sure is to pull the top off the transmission and look as you rotate the gears around. It could last for years like that but it could let go and harm something else... (read expensive) If theres another gear that you can use that doesn't clatter, I'd be using that one and split it this winter and finding a tractor junkyard for a replacement and maybe even replace the gear thats running with the bad one. Especially if it shows any signs of abnormal wear or chipping. Also I'd inspect the bearings on the shaft that the bad gears are riding on. A magnet will remove any metal shavings or ex teeth that are down in the bottom of the transmission. Fred
