My TE20 is currently missing on cylinder #4. I have changed the distributor cap, checked the lead going to that cylinder, checked the firing order, and cleaned/adjusted the points but it still seems to miss on just that one cylinder. The spark is sporadic and weak. I had the problem before I got the new distributor cap and it has just started doing it again. I cannot work out why one cylinder is being singled out.

Hey, Chris, what a challenge to the little grey cells, huh? Once I spent a long, long afternoon figuring out that a Champion plug new out of the box didn't work at all(6-cylinder Ford truck) as I was completing a tuneup. You didn't mention checking out your plugs: did you try swapping plugs to different cylinders to see if the miss followed the plug? Maybe your coil and/or condenser is weak. Good luck! Tex

thanks for the help guys. I've checked my plugs and swapped them around. I've ended up replacing everything in the distributor incl. condenser, rotor, points. After adjusting it all up it now seems to be running well. but i'm not holding my breath! Watch this space. The only things I haven't replaced are the leads and the coil, altough i've been told by an auto electrician that the coil wouldn't affect the cylinders. Is that right?

Chris, I once was troubleshooting an irritating miss in my 81 F-150, and a parts counter guy suggested I look under the hood in the dark, especially at my plug wires and coil. I saw quite a light show on the coil -- lots of blue sparkies running down the sides to the bracket. Glad I hadn't used the Polish method: running a finger along each plug wire and around the coil! Anyway, after I replaced the coil, my miss disappeared. But it sounds like you have solved the problem -- just file this idea for future reference. Good luck and happy pulling! Tex

I have seen this problem before and was always curious myself as to why it happens. I kinda suspicion that it is furthest from the oil pump and doesn't get oiled like the rest of them and eventually goes to pumping a little oil up around the rings fouling the plug. You might try using a spark plug that runs hotter. That seems to burn the oil off and keep them running better. Also you might try running a heavier (try 10W40) oil at the next oil change. Fred
