Turning Brakes on TO-20

O-K guys.....I promise I will get a service manual real soon...but until I do- another question:

The pedals for the "turning brakes" (one on left, one on right, for when you want to use just one brake)on my new and beloved TO-20 seem to kinda just hang there- and when you step on the main brake pedal, the turning brake pedals jump UP- and when you let off the main brake pedal, they again lower to where they are just hanging there.

This doesn't seem right- is there any chance that this is the way they're supposed to be? (If anything, I would imagine they should be in a raised position normally, and, if anything, they should go down when the main brake pedal is activated)

Beleive it or not...

Yeah..... brake pedals are originaly designed to operate like you described.

Seems bizarre but.....

That brake thing had really been bugging me- I figured maybe somewhere along the line, someone put something together wrong. Weird! I can sleep better tonight, knowing all is well with the little gray guy. I love this tractor! What is it about these things that gets such a hold over us? I guess they're a monument to reliability and usefulness and economy- a showcase of what men used to be capable of!

Have you noticed that you can pull your turning brake lever up with your hand and activate it just as you can by stepping on it? That may explain why it is engineered the way it is.

Hehehe....no! Never noticed that. (I've only had my tractor for a week and a half). Good thing you mentioned that.....or I would've thought mine was messed up for sure if I discovered that on my own!

I certainly like this brake set-up much better than the way it is on a 9N- I just cant understand what made Henry Ford put a brake pedal on the same side as the clutch, with no way to operate both brakes at the same time- guess he never had to drive a tractor. Luckily, Harry Ferguson must've spent some time on tractors!

An old farmer I know tells me he went right off the road and over a hedge when, without thinking, he reached down and pulled up one of the independant brake pedals which he though had stuck down a bit! The brake came on, a swift "right wheel" ensued and he landed off the road and in a field. They defintely work just as well in either direction.
