Help - I cannot engage reverse or the starter position with the gear stick - any suggestions would be appreaciated

These tractors originally had a safety feature, whereby you have to pull up (or was it down?....no....I think up) on the shifter handle to engage reverse and start- have you given that a try? (The mechanism is usually so worn after all these years, that on many tractors- including mine, it is no longer present)

Sounds like your shift rails are outa line , take out two bolts holding gear shift in , line up rails with a screwdriver , reinstall shift , good luck

I would like to add to what Mr. Mc Pherson just said. Open up the shift housing look around but look at the end of the shifter. Is it so worn that your not really in the rails at those positions? and finally check the spring on the handle, is it good and strong? If not get one or replace it with strong rubber hosing. Real story...This winter I'm plowing my drive, and the handle jumped the rails, The plow is in the ditch, the back blade (used for weight)is in the road! I had to have my neighbor pull me back into my drive while I fixed this in a storm. Luckily it was straight forward and the shaft was not excessively worn. Do not twitch with the shift handle!
