Just purchased a '49 TO-20, and while doing some preventative maintenance on it today, I noticed that there is a brass valve sticking out of the engine block, just under the carb. -it has a little handle, apparently to open and close it (there is an outlet). What could this be for?

Also: Is it possible to widen the stance of the rear wheels on these tractor....and if so, how does one accomplish this?

I thought the valve was for getting air out of the block to prevent an air lock in the coolant system when the block was completely drained, or to let air in to completely drain the system. The theory was when water/antifreeze comes out of the valve, you're full and won't get hot spots when starting with new coolant or after a rebuild (sorta like the little hole in an auto thermostat). ??? I don't know, cause I've never had a Ferguson block to examine!

Visit a MF dealership and purchase a reprint owners manual. The wheel widing procedure is there along with lots of other needed information.

If you open the valve water should drain out the block. The valve may not work. Mine is stuck. You should be able to widen the back tires by tuning them around or repositioning the rim on the disk.

The valve is to drain the coolant from the block .
