sometimes when i tried to start my to-20 it wouldn't,no nothing,then after a few tries it would start ok.yesterday i was cutting did about 5 acres stopped put gas in tried to start nothing waited a few minutes and started.today i tried to start and its showing a discharge on the ammeter,also battery cables are getting warm,cables are new,bought a new starter switch,i think thats the name (under batt.both cables hook to it)it is a 12 volt system.thanks in advance for any help. dj

Connection of ground cable to tractor is real key. Remove it, clean, steel wool, whatever, on tractor and on cable, make sure it is absolutely super connection in every way, and use #0 or 1 cable size, as others said. Sometimes I have concentrated on the connections at the battery and forgotten the ground connection onto the tractor and that has been the problem.

two things come to mind, cables to small,or hooked them up wrong. 6v pos ground 12v neg ground

DJ...Let me tell you a little secret that I tried when my TO-20 was playing hard to start. Seems as if old starters, cables, and connectors kinda contribute to this, probably weak coils and cruddy mis-adjusted greasy points and worn plugs as well. Anyhow as you are cranking it, it seems like you can crank and crank till the battery gives up and it won't fire. Try this; as you are cranking and the engine is whirling over, release the starter and a lot of times it will take right off. Reason..it stops the heavy current going to the starter and provides more to the electrical system. A lot of times this is all it needs, Just shows me that I need to spend some time and money on the electrical system, but, you know how it is. I'm gonna fix that one of these days. Each one gives clues to it's condition if you just pay attention to it. An example is: if you give it more than a little throttle to start and it floods out...the electrical system may be a little weak, too much gas in there and the spark can't ignite it. Of course it can be a host of other things together causing it but, you can be aware of them too...like when was the last time it had a valve job. The worst scenario would be for everything to be worn out. Think about some of these as you're evaluating the old girl, maybe it'll help to solve a problem or two in the future. Fred

just wanted to add the following,did not have this problem until i replaced the battery cable.the cable is from an auto parts store 4 gauge.could this have something to do with my problem?

You've got to put a heavier gauge cable on it and make sure you don't over tighten the connections to the starter switch or they'll short out.
