Hey guys,
I have a 12v negative gronnd starter. It worked fine for the four years that I have owned it. The other day it just stopped. I checked it out and found that the bendix was pretty much stuck with no movement in either direction. I brought it down to the local starter place and had it rebuilt. I put it back on and it started three times and then disintegrated on the 4th try. I brought it back to the auto electric shop and he said it was cooked and that it was my fault because I have a problem in the starting system somewhere. He orderded me a new rebuilt starter and I noticed the new bendix ratchets one way (the broken one did not) So whats the deal? He wants me to drag my tractor all the way down to his shop so he can check the system. I suspect I could bolt the new one on and it would work fine. Does anyone have any imput? How does this starter work? Why does the bendix ratchet? I hope someone can help.
Thanks,
Tom
