TO-20 dead???/

My to-20 was running ok, but the distributor was vibrating terribly and tore up a couple. I took it in to have a real mechanic look at it. He took off the valve cover, and the governor assembly. He is telling me the governor is missing some parts (like three ball bearings), the cam gear is damaged, and the cam may be broke, (he says he can't tell unless he pulls the head off). There is a dropped valve, and a few push rods are bent. My question....what should I do. He says to change out the cam, replace the push rods, and finally the governor needs to be rebuilt( assuming he is able to find parts). Estimated cost around $1,000. What should I Do? junk the tractor? go for a complete rebuild? help

I think its time for a second opinion. The cost is way to high for the damage that you explained.

For a few hundred dollars more you can have a totally rebuilt engine from the place they used to call CT in Des Moines.....that's everything in the engine rebuilt. And all the precision work will be done by people who do it everyday for a living. All you'd have to do is swap engines and a few acessories and adjust the valves. (or have them adjusted) Also the head would need to be torqued down with a torque wrench. If you're not a confident mechanic and you want it done right....maybe that's the way to go, especially if the rest of the tractor seems to be in good condition. Just another possibility. You can pull the pan and have some one turn the crank with a socket back and forth and see if the cam is broke. You might have to touch it with your fingers to feel movement. I had one busted in a TO-30 once but the rod did it when it went throught the block when someone else had it. 500.00 later a couple of days work and it was back in use again. Been using it for 7 months haven't had a problem with it and have not used a drop of oil as far as I can tell too. It was a used block with pistons and cam I put in. Good luck and fix it up you forget about the money when you get to use it again. Or you could buy another one and have other problems. If I had not just sold all the parts you need I could have fixed you up for around 500.00 and you do the labor. Mark H.

The way I feel is, if you junk it you're out what you've got in it. If you got it fixed you've got yourself a good tractor with a new engine for $1000 that you can use for a long time or sell for alot more than $1000.

My suggestion is to look at the kind of tractor you can buy today for $1,000, 1,500, even 2,000 and when you get it home you won't have 1/10th the tractor that your Fergie is. Whoever said you'll forget about the money when your tractor is back in service was right on.
