Last fall I broke the nose cone on my TO 30. I had a guy braze it back together and today it broke again. The braze held strong. It cracked in different place. When I put it together after it was brazed last fall I noticed it banging really hard when I would start it. I diddn't pay too much attention to it because I thought I was just being paranoid as I usually am after something brakes. I don't want to buy another nose cone only to have it break again. Any suggestions on why it slams so hard or do they all engage really hard? Any other possible causes? The tractor has been converted over to 12v if that has anything to do with it. Help please.

Maybe your nose cone broke because your flyweights in the dist. are not being pulled back sometimes when you stop the engine. Some starter drives seem to engage with a bang on some 12 volt conversions. I shimmed the end play on my armature and that quieted it down for awhile. Have heard of people using real skinny 12 volt battery cables also.

Sounds like your timing is too far advanced. The spark is firing the cylinder before TDC, causing it to kick back. A common symptom is a broken starter nose cone. First thing I'd do is retard it a bit, then try starting it. Then I'd put a timing light on there and get it set right.

I timed it today. It's spot on 6 degrees at 4oo rpm. Should I retard it back? were you assuming that it was too far advanced or shoud it not be what the book says?

This happened to me some time back. I found a replacement nose cone. I shimmed the starter out and retimed the engine by the book.(I&T Manual)
