I'm the new proud owner of a TO-30 and have a couple of questions. I've got manuals on the way. What fluid do I use in the transfer case/hyd. etc.(90W gear oil)? The transfer case fluid does have some water in it. My serial number plate is missing, is there another way to find tractor date? Also coolant is rusty and a little bubbly after I shut it off. No water in oil though. Also I saw somewhere that there is a conversion for the PTO from 1 1/8" to 1 3/8". Is there any advatage to this conversion. I do need new seals at the PTO exit and this conversion includes the seals. Any other suggestions or items to look at will be appreciated.

Thanks for the help.
Tom

I'm not sure if it is the same on the TO-30 but on my TO-20 there is a casting date on the axle trumpets. You might try looking there.

Do not put gear oil in your Ferguson. Read the archives on trans fluid or read oil???what kind it was posted a few days ago. As for the pto conversion it is nice to have but not necessary. The Ferg's came with 1 1/8 shaft but the industry standard now is 1 3/8 shaft. So if you are planning on using a few pto powered implements it will be helpful. If you buy the kit to do it will come with all new seals/gaskets/bearings. Or you can just buy an adapter to convert 1 1/8 to 1 3/8.
The bubbles in the radiator are not usually a good sign. Flush the system with water a few times and see if problem still exists. If it does write back. I would not jump right into a head gasket replacement. I'd look for a simpler causes first.
I think these guys here can date a tractor from the engine #'s post them and see.

GL-1 gear oil is same as mineral oil. That's what the manual calls for.

80-90w GL1 gear oil is proper fluid for rear end. drain all 3 holes to get all the water. one fill hole for all. u may have to go to MF dealer to get GL1 although some rural NAPAs sell it. drain and flush radiator well. i use one gallon of antifreeze. u can just use a over-running clutch (ORC) to convert from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 pto shaft, and just replace the seal, saving you some $$. u need the ORC anyway if u are going to bush hog. hope that helps.
