i have a 51 to-20,just recently bought it and i do not have any manuals yet.since reading the post's has been very helpful.what oil goes in the trans.case just under the shifter lever and how much.thanks to all this site is just fantastic.

That is the filler hole for the trans, differential and hydraulics. It's a bit confusing at first, I know, one filler hole and 3 drains. The whole thing holds about 6 gallons of fluid. The dipstick for this is on the right side of the tractor below the seat. Do not just put any fluid in there. Do a search on trans fluid in the archives and read up on it or just go to the Ford/New Holland dealership and get 134a fluid. That's what the "N" boys use. It might not be a bad idea to change the fluid. That's what I did when I bought my To-30. Good thing I did there was lots of water in there and who knows how long it had been since it was changed before I did it if ever. If you do change it drain one plug at a time and make sure you have a large container. You will be surprised how much fluid comes out each hole.

The real stuff is M1103, p/n MF841718M1 available aat any MF dealer or they can order which is 90W mineral oil. The Ford stuff is ok too. Yes, by all means change the oil if you don't know the history or integrity. I removed the pump and the top housing with the work cylinder and found lots of water and sludge in the bottom and crevices that didn't drain out. It's a bit of work and at same time you can inspect the pump parts and over haul as needed and after that you probably will never have to be troubled again. I found the job fun and a learning experience but wouldn't want to do it for again for a while.At least change the oil if the hydraulics work ok and have in spec lifting pressure and no leakeage internally(heavy implemtnt stays up for few hrs).
