I've read the manual and have been told what the manual says. Now I would like to really know what the correct oil should be. The manual says 90w minerial oil and been told it is 90w gear oil. What should it be for real. I know you guys will come up with the facts like you always do. Thanks in advance. PAul

Paul, Use 80/90W mineral oil. You can purchase it from farm supply or oil supply outlets. They usually carry it in bulk and if you bring your own containers it goes from about 4-6 dollars a gallon.
TEAs take 6 gallons. Open all 3 drian plugs. When I do it on a tractor that I have just purchased I usually open the observation port on the back side and check for crap in the bottom. Most times I pull the PTO shaft (good time to replace seal) Drop the pump and give it a good cleaning then refill with mineral oil. USE mineral oil..thats what they were designed for, guys that use other stuff just don't put the effort into getting mineral oil.
Just my thoughts
Joe

Read the archives on this subject. There has been lots written here and on the "N" board. I did what the "N" boys do and went to the Ford/New Holland dealership. Tell them what tractor you have and and got 134d. I think the full code is M2C134D. If you go somewhere else like wal-mart/tractor supply/discount auto parts house DO NOT get anything with a GL rating of anything greater that 1. These oils have ratings from GL1 to GL5. The more addatives they put in them the higher the number. From what I've gathered the additives are corrosive to the ferguson/Ford N Trans.
Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

Don't use 90w gear oil; it's too thick. 90w mineral oil is thinner, even though the number is the same. They rate oil is at its intended operating temperature, so you can't compare them very well.
There is oil now that has been designed specifically for tractors with common differential, transmission, and hydraulic sumps; it's just what we need. Hydraulic oil is no good for the diff, tranny oil is no good for the hydraulics, etc. Tractor dealers know this and will set you up with the right stuff. The only one I know of that's definitely right (since I haven't checked around much) is Shell Donax TD. Its viscosity is rated at about 82, but when you pour it you'll see that its thickness seems like around 50 weight motor oil.

Thanks, This is what I wanted to know. I thought there was something wrong with gear oil , but did not know. This is useful info. Hope everyone else reads it to.
