TE-20 Transmission Setting S

All I can figure is either- Start or Stationary operation for the PTO. Am I any where near it?

The S means START (Engine) when you push the gear leveler in to that, the starter motor should engage....
There is a small switch on top of the clutch housing, just undernieth the battery tray....

My TE20 has a key switch on the dash and a starter button. The key looks new (or at least replaced and the push button looks origional. I start mine with the transmission in neutral, turn the key on and push the starter button. Never put the tractor in "S"

I also only had this tractor for 6 months or so.

YES, i do think that the starter system has been modified.
Originally you would turn the key, and then put it in the S position, and the starter would engage...
But this can have been modified, because of wear in the gear box...If you take the gear handle out of reverse you can be unlucky, and and put it in the S position, and that aint a good thing.....
I know it can be fixed, but i cant tell you how...

Anyway, you should undoo the "damage"... If somone that is not used to the tractor tries start it,and they arent in the seat, that can be dangerous...
