TO30 /w Z120?

I bought a TO30 (At least that is what is on the ID plate) last summer, and As time permits I have been rebuilding some of the hydraulics as the bushings for the hydraulic lift shaft were shot & the control spring plunger was frozen. So for most of the year it has been in my shop. That is all done now & I have moved to the engine. The engine ran fine, so I have just be going over it, inpecting it & changing out the fluids when I noticed the oil filter wasn't where it was suppose to be. It turns out it is a TO-20 engine the Z120. Now I am curious, did some past owner swap out the engine for a Z120, or were some TO30s built with the Z120? Also where can I find or fabricate a seal for the hand holecover assembly on the bottom oil pan? In addition, where can I find a fuel filter stack that goes inside the sediment bowl? Thanks for any help.

The big rubber gasket in the bottom of the oil pan that houses the oil filter is available from MF for about $3.00 US. My TO 20 does not have the fuel filter stack in the sediment bowl so I never went looking for one.

By TO30 being on the ID plate, I assume you mean the serial number on the plate cross references to a TO30. My guess is that someone replaced the steering box / dash on your TO20 tractor with steering from a TO30 and left the ID plate on it instead of removing and re-riviting the plate from the orignial onto the replacement. In other words, my guess is that you may have a TO20 with a TO30 steering box (and ID plate), instead of a TO30 with a TO20 engine as you are assuming. Just a thought....

I hadn't thought about this possibility, but it is entirely possible. The ssn on the data plate is 70117, which would make it a 30 from late 1951, the cowling is from a TO30, the engine is a Z120, but I cannot make out anything from the engine ID plate to determine a date. Do you know of any other differences in rest of the tractor that would indicate a 20 vs a 30?

The only difference I can think off is the TO30 has a more elaborate control valve in the hyd. pump than the TO 20. Look at a I T manual to see the difference.
There may be lots of other differences I don't know of.

Well now that you mention it, I did have the hydraulic lift cover off & I became somewhat familiar with what was inside it. So I did go back to the manual specificaly comparing what it described for the TO20 vs the TO30. It turns out that the TO30 has a safety baffle over the safety valve that the TO20 does not have. My machine has the baffle. The TO20 uses a flat gasket and spacers between the cover and the hydraulic cylinder while the TO30 uses only an O-ring and no spacers. Mine had only an O-ring. So it would appear that I do indeed have a TO30, with a TO20 engine (Z120) -- go figure. By the way I did locate a gasket for the oil pan access hole, from an implement dealer, & I also found a local company that can make them any size. I measured the gasket & it is (as near as I can determine) 1/4" thick, 5 3/4" ID, 6 1/2" OD. Next time I will just have one made. It costs a little more but it is better than driving 40 miles for it. Thanks for everyone's help.

I can't think of anything else to check. I do not know of any difference in the hydraulics or brakes, e.g., but maybe someone else can tell us. But I do know if the steering gets water in it, the case can crack in cold weather and sometimes people replace the whole thing rather than just the sector gears, etc.
